When it comes to dating, I have a type. You have a type and they (whoever they may be) have a type. We all have a type. The ironic thing about having a type is, that we have been dating this same type all of our lives and then get upset when it doesn’t work out. The harsh reality is, your type don’t want you!
Now, I’m sure you’re a nice person and have a lot going for you in life but, not everyone else in the world is going to find that attractive enough to commit to you long term and, that’s okay. No matter how attractive you think Idris Alba and Beyonce are, there are actually people who don’t find them or their success attractive. That’s just how life works.
Typically, we assign “types” to those we feel an inexplicable attraction for. Whether it be because of a certain look or physical feature they posses, there’s something about them that fits your ideal but, is also entirely superficial. Having these “types” are also why you always seem to run into the same dating problems over and over again and find yourself dating in circles. You’re likely dating in circles because your interests revolve around what you like and not what you need. Maybe it’s time to try something different.
What if, instead of dating your type, you opted to date according to your standards? Let’s be honest. We say we want somebody who can stimulate our minds and a bunch of other cool things but we rarely ever hold true to those wants. We usually adjust our standards according to how close a person is to our type. That’s the issue. Our standards should be considered more like core values that can’t be compromised instead of suggestions that can be tailored for perceived ideals.
The problem in dating is that we rarely hold ourselves accountable for the people we date. If it doesn’t work out, it’s always the other persons’ fault and never our own for picking the same person once again. It’s time to finally take accountability for our dating lives and date according to our standards and not our types.
